Rare surgery performed

BANGALORE: During her pregnancy, Anila was told that her yet-to-be-born baby had a critical narrowing of the aortic valve — Critical Aortic Stenosis.

A day after the delivery, the baby had to undergo a rare procedure. A team of interventional cardiologists at Manipal Heart Foundation, have performed a procedure called Balloon Valvuloplasty on the baby boy successfully.

The baby was born with poor heart condition, breathing difficulty and with blood pressure not being recordable.

The baby was shifted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Manipal Hospital. On the first day, the baby was put on mechanical ventilator.

He had continuous convulsions due to the poor heart condition. On the second day, Dr Anand Shenoy, interventional cardiologist, Manipal Heart Foundation, decided to conducted Balloon Valvuloplasty to save the baby's life.

Explains Dr Shenoy, "In this procedure, the Aortic valve was opened with a balloon and we achieved excellent procedure results. Twentyfour hours after the procedure, the baby's condition improved. The baby was discharged after seven days in a stable condition."

Apparently, the surgery was extremely risky in this case as the child was only a day old. The doctors said both mother and baby are in good health.
