MAHE Becomes First e-learning Varsity in India

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) today claimed to have become the first university in the country to offer e-learning facility for medical students.

Launching its "digital campus" here, Ramadas M Pai, President, MAHE said, e-learning would be offered to medical students as per the Medical Council of India (MCI) curriculum.

Through this, over 2,000 medical students will have access to e-learning, he said.

To facilitate this, the university has distributed 3,000 laptops to students and 1,500 laptops to faculty members, Pai said.

In the first phase, Wi-Fi has been implemented at selected locations which will soon be followed by wireless connectivity at 35 hostels and 24 academic buildings, he said.

MAHE, has also set up a world class data centre to provide 24x7 IT application service besides digitising its admission process, Pai said.

Call for improvement in higher education

Finance Minister P Chidambaram today called for enhancing resources to make India a world leader in higher education.

"Access to higher education is limited and there is an urgent need to remove the financial constraints in this sphere," he said after inaugurating the university building of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) here.

Higher education deserves support by alumni and philanthropists, he said.

Realising the need to increase accessibility to higher education, the government, he said, was looking at more credit finance through banks to the students going for professional studies without any collateral security.

The government through banks had disbursed loans to a total of Rs 10,050 crore by March 2006 for higher education, he said. The banks have today realised that credit to higher education was a profitable portfolio, he said.

He termed the agitation on reservation as "nothing but the other side of the coin for access to all other professions, techers were not accorded the highest status they deserved.

This was one of the reasons why outstanding persons prefer professions other than teaching though the country had exceptional talent, he said.
