Mangaloreans bid adieu to champion of Konkani dialect

MUSCAT — The Mangalorean community in Oman bids adieu to one of its stalwarts — Gerald D’Mello — who is set to migrate to Canada.

Gerald, better known as Gerry D’Mello Bendur, arrived on the beautiful shores of Oman on April 25, 1985 and served in a number of organisations in different capacities over the past 20 years.

At the time of leaving, he was working for Aon Majan LLC, a leading firm of insurance brokers and consultants, as administration and finance manager.

Gifted and multifaceted, Gerry grew in stature over the years as a Konkani poet, author, singer, stage actor, and a champion of the Konkani dialect. He has organised and anchored numerous programmes and events showcasing the richness and diversity of Mangalorean and Konkani culture.

As a leading light of the Mangalorean community in Oman, Gerry served as vice-president of the Parish Pastoral Council of Sts Peter and Paul Church, Ruwi, from 2001 to 2003. He was the first and only Mangalorean to date to serve as vice-President on this body.

Best known for his inimitable emceeing skills, Gerry has compered more than 300 programmes and events in Mangalore and Oman.

A songwriter and composer in his own right, he has composed around 25 songs in Konkani. Some of his fine songs, such as Mai (Mother) and Shtri (Woman) have been well appreciated by music lovers. Besides, Gerry has also composed nearly 50 poems, which have been published in Konkani periodicals such as Raknno, Divo, Kannik, Mithr and Jhelo.
