Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam register wins

A blaze of yellow at the Municipal Jawahar Square left everybody confused at the 50th State senior basketball championship here on Sunday.

Even as the State association officials held a clinic nearby to explain a few new rules, the men's teams from Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad turned up for their league game in bright yellow jerseys. Naturally, the referees and the spectators were in a tizzy. Even the two sides took a few minutes to get comfortable with their team-mates.

However, Thiruvananthapuram, with four of its main five players from the new BSNL team, did not let this problem affect its rhythm. With stars like international M. Anoop and former junior India players Monish Wilson and Bobit Mathew in its ranks, the boys from the capital brushed aside Palakkad 76-49 to stay on course for a place in the quarterfinals.

Defending champion Ernakulam also had it easy, despite not playing at full steam, with its dependable centre Subash Shenoy and V. Vivek dominating the show.

The results (league): Men: Pool A: Ernakulam 55 (Subash Shenoy 26, V. Vivek 16) bt Kasargod 44 (M. Hari 20, Gopalakrishnan 11); Pathanamthitta 61 (Vineeth Ravi 17, K.S. Akbar 17, Shinto George 11) bt Kottayam 35 (Ganesh Varghese 10); Kasargod 86 (Ratheesh 24, Sanoop Chandra 13, Hari 12) bt Kottayam 80 (Dipumon 30, Ginesh 25).
