B V Baliga of 'Panchkadai' No More

Former president of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, well-known journalist and Konkani writer Bantwal Vasudeva Baliga (87) passed away in the city on Saturday Dec 10th 2005.

He had served in newspapers and periodicals like Prabhat, Saraswat and Navbharat for many years before founding his own Konkani monthly 'Panchkadai', which incidntally is the name of a favaourite savoury among the Saraswats, which is made up of an assortment of tasty ingredients. The name of the monthly thus represented the variety of articles it offered. He ran the magazine for about 25 years and then for reasons of age handed it over to the Konkani Bhashoddhara Trust of Manipal.

Baliga was founder committee member of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal Karnataka. He had served as president of the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy between 1995-97. He had also acted in Konkani movies Tapaswini and Janamana, besides having written the dialogues for the latter. He has been credited with having penned over 700 poems in Kannada and Konkani.

He had also served in several organizations like Kannada Sahitya Parishat and Minority Institutions' Association. He was honoured by a number of institutions and organizations like All India Konkani Bhasha Parishat, Konkani Academy, Goa, Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Mumbai, Dr TMA Pai Foundation, Manipal, Mangalore Press Club etc.
